Welcome to the Aikido Club
of the University of Ulster at Coleraine

Irimi Nage (Ian throwing Colin) Welcome to our new website. We are a club training in a traiditional style of Aikido at the University of Ulster at Coleraine.

Aikido is a relatively modern Japanese martial art developed by Morehei Ueshiba sensei in the 20th Century based on many more ancient arts he had studied. It can be used for self defence, and aims not to use lethal force against an attacker.

The word can be split into three pieces :

Ai means "harmony",

Ki means "energy, or spirit",

Do means "the way, or path".

Aikido can be studied by people of all genders and ages.

You can look at our introduction for more information on the origins of Aikido.

Irimi Nage (Colin Throwing Donal)Practice is open to beginners as well as experienced aikidoka, and the details for training times are available on the training page.

For those students already studying at the club, the grading syllabus as available for your inspection and/or download.
